4 Ways to Exercise with your Kids
Every mom knows that trying to fit in exercise when you have a family and a job can be tough. It’s hard to take time away from your kids and household obligations to go for a run or hit the gym.
I try not to let my mom guilt get in the way of working on my fitness but let’s face it, moms are pulled in so many directions. There are so many tasks to do in a day and only so many hours.
One way I have found to make exercise a priority and still make sure I’m spending time with my daughter is to include her in the workout!
There are lots of different ways I do this. Don’t get me wrong, I still hit the gym on a regular basis or go for a run by myself but here are four easy ways to exercise with your kids.
Head to the Pool
An afternoon or evening trip to your local pool can be a great way to exercise as a family. You can take part in Family swim time or do laps while your kids have swimming lessons. Many community pools have Mom and Me swim time for moms with little kids. If your pool has a fitness center attached you can work out while your kids take swimming lessons.
Dance Fitness Class
I started dropping into a local Refit dance fitness class. If you aren’t familiar with Refit, it’s a cardio dance class kind of like Zumba. Kids can join in with moms so you both burn off some energy. The music is great and they turn on the disco lights while we get grooving. My daughter loves to dance with the other little girls and the drop in fee for the two of us is less than $5. Check your local community centers for similar mom and me dance fitness classes.
If you live in a community where you can safely cycle around, why not hop on your bike and ride around town to run some of your errands? Little kids can sit on a seat on the back of your bike and older kids can ride along side of you on their bikes.
Depending on how old your kids are you can make it a habit to go on weekly hikes in the summertime. Try to explore a different trail each week. You will all benefit from the fresh air and exercise and it’s a great way to learn about nature and your local environment.
I recently enrolled my daughter in indoor roller skating classes. I decided to join in on the class and was surprised how much fun it was. I used some muscles that hadn’t been worked in a while and got a nice hour long cardio workout in. It was a lot of fun to wear the retro skates and roll along to the pop music.
If you don’t have an indoor roller rink near you, grab your skates and head out to an empty parking lot or boardwalk in your town.
